In our Film & Fashion Makeup Diploma Program, students progress beyond the incredible beauty and into the bloody, beastly and bizarre.
This course's advanced training in film and fashion makeup includes comprehensive lessons in out-of-kit special effects makeup and the most advanced prosthetics makeup program in western Canada.
Along this thrilling journey, students discover their inner talents as our instructors prepare them for work in the professional field of makeup artistry in film, stage and fashion. Our students will prepare a unique professional portfolio and résumé as tools to enter the workforce with confidence.
Outline
You will learn the process and the etiquette of bridal consultations, rates, negotiations, and other procedures as well as bridal make-up for day, evening and ethnic weddings. This module includes wedding styles, cultural differences and a brief introduction to photography and lighting.
BRIDAL MAKEUP
You will be provided with a solid understanding of basic beauty fundamentals including skin care, corrective techniques and glamour make-up application.
Get ready to learn the basics of professonal etiquette, hygiene, anatomy, skin care, color theory, face and eye shapes, corrective techniques, day applications, evening and glamour applications, ethnic studies, mature applications, era make-up and men’s make-up.
This module provides you with a foundational knowledge of hair science, products and tools as well as hair styling, building and designing a variety of down and up-dos. You will learn hair anatomy, tools, products and their uses, suitable styles for hair types and facial shapes, blow drying, roller sets, down-dos, up-dos and specialized hair techniques.
AIR BRUSHING
What was once a new tool is now an industry standard skill. You will learn the internal workings of an airbrush, troubleshooting airbrush problems and designing templates and stencils. With this knowledge you will be able to create flawless beauty, fantasy
and full body make-up.
Material for this course includes airbrush knowledge (parts, troubleshooting and repair), contouring, highlighting and free hand techniques, fantasy design, tattoo as well as blemish and other corrective techniques.
MAKEUP & PHOTOGRAPHY LEVEL 1
This module will help you to understand the different makeup techniques used in both color and black & white photography. You will learn basic lighting types, effects, systems and accessories used in both film and digital photography.
The course material includes photography make-up for color and black & white, photo-shoot etiquette, make-up artist responsibilities, lighting theory, color theory and its effect on make-up application as well as various types of photo-shoots.
HIGH FASHION
During this module you will use the skills and techniques you’ve learned thus far to achieve new heights of creative and technical excellence. You will become familiar with the use of “croquis” design, interpretation of tear sheets, fashion etiquette and terminology,
houses of design and your role as a make-up artist.
You will learn about key make-up responsibilities, haute couture vs. ready to wear, high fashion vs. avant-garde and current runway trends.
PHOTOGRAPHY THEORY
Taught by a professional photographer in conjunction with your make-up instructor, this course will provide you with insight into the inner workings of a camera, specific camera settings, photography critique, and teach the basics of digital editing for photography
with an emphasis on Photoshop, a commonly used software suite for digital photographic editing.
This module includes camera knowledge, settings, night & day, still life, portrait, cropping, layered effects, color photography, black & white photography and critiquing images.
MAKEUP & PHOTOGRAPHY LEVEL 2
You will apply the skills you have learned thus far, combining them into three editorial photo-shoots for both color and black & white photography. Stylizing techniques, croquets development and photography skills will be further explored and enhanced.
Course material includes hands-on, one-on-one guidance through every step, from research to design to execution. You will gain new perspective on the synergy of make-up, hair and wardrobe design for high fashion shoots.
MAKEUP FOR STAGE AND SET
The TV and film industry is an exciting, challenging work environment. Stage Makeup presents unique artistic demands, while High-definition Television and Film requires exceptional attention to detail for Makeup Artists. In this module you will become familiar
with the high definition, corrective and character make-up design, application and procedures for stage, television and film as well as onset terminology, crew titles and job descriptions. The internal workings of a film set will be explored.
You will learn different styles of high definition TV make-up and character design. Theatrical make-up, script breakdowns, old-age make-up and gender transformations are also examined.
SPECIAL MAKEUP EFFECTSFUNDAMENTALS
You will learn how to create minor and major special make-up effects for TV and film, instructed with the subtlety necessary to ensure onscreen realism.
This module includes bruising, black eyes, scars, burns, blood, sweat, tears, scrapes, cuts, frostbite, gashes, road-rash, broken noses, bullet holes, facial hair, aging and bald cap application.
PROSTHETIC ARTS
From otherworldly aliens to unearthly creatures to film-quality injury effects, you will learn the fascinating process involved in creating and applying prosthetics of a variety of materials, including advanced studies in the creation of silicone prosthetics.
You’ll be trained in the arts of life-casting for the head and body, molding in plaster and silicone, sculpting in clay and plasticine, mixing, pouring and seaming the varied ingredients of a cast, hair-punching, painting and application of silicone, foam latex and gelatin appliances. You’ll be called upon to utilize all your skills in creating a creature or creation suitable for high-definition filming.
WORK EXPERIENCE
You will take part in the production of short film. You will be working in a real production environment with experienced actors, directors and technicians, applying your lessons in on-set etiquette and multitasking in the exciting, complex process of bringing
a film to fruition.
You will apply lessons learned from film industry veterans to prepare actors for their starring roles and create the makeup effects the story demands. You’ll be doing everything from beauty to bullet holes, creatures to characters.
Your schedule will vary according to production times. This is the ultimate test of your training in beauty make-up and special effects. You will graduate with real on-set experience and film credits to give you a jump-start on your career. Whether you aspire to fashion or film, to the bristling energy of a fashion show or the bustling pace of on-set life, you will have the skills, experience, and confidence to create success all your own.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT
In this module students focus on career options, interview skills and resume/portfolio building as well as film union information and applications. Working in conjunction with your instructor you will create a breathtaking portfolio
consisting of your best work.
